What is the process for renewing a Passport?
To renew or issue a new passport, you will need to present your valid Portuguese ID Card (Cartão de Cidadão). You should make an appointment through the online booking service, available here.
After collection of the biometric data, the passport will be ready within 10 working days (normal applications) or 5 working days (urgent applications). Passport renewals will have a cost of 75€ (normal applications) or 120€ (urgent applications).
In the case of minors, the minor must be accompanied by the legal representative (father, mother or legal guardian) and must present the respective Portuguese ID Card (Cartão de Cidadão) or valid passport.
Is it possible to renew a Passport with an expired Portuguese ID Card (Cartão de Cidadão)?
The presentation of a valid Portuguese ID card is mandatory to request a Passport renewal. Photocopies and photos will not be accepted.

Portuguese ID Card (Cartão de Cidadão)
What is the process for the renewal of the Portuguese ID Card (Cartão de Cidadão)?
In order to proceed with the renewal of the Portuguese ID Card (Cartão de Cidadão), you will be required to visit the Embassy twice:
- The first time, to collect the biometric data (photo, height, fingerprints and signature);
- The second time, after receiving notice from the Embassy that the ID Card and the respective PIN have been duly received from Portugal and are available for collection.
The time between the initial visit to the Embassy and the subsequent reception of the PIN letter that allows the ID Card to be validated and collected, is approximately 21 to 30 days. The cost for renewing the ID Card is 23€.

Signature Recognition
What is the process to request a signature recognition?
Signatures can be recognized in-person at the Embassy (done in the presence of the consular officer), upon presentation of a valid Passport or Portuguese ID Card (Cartão de Cidadão). For in-person signature recognition, the interested party shall visit the Embassy, by prior appointment, with the document(s) duly printed and to be signed at the Embassy, in the presence of the consular officer.

Will I need to take a translator?
If you do not speak Portuguese or English, you should visit the Embassy with an interpreter on the day of the signature recognition. A list of qualified translators can be provided by sending an email to sconsular.pequim@mne.pt.
Power of Attorney
What is the process for requesting a power of attorney?
If you wish to request a power of attorney at the Embassy, you must send by e-mail all the necessary documents duly scanned, including the draft of the power of attorney in Word format, as well as a telephone contact. The documents should be sent at least 48 hours prior to the appointment. The email for sending the documents is: sconsular.pequim@mne.pt

Will I need to take a translator?

Translation of documents
Does the Embassy of Portugal in China translate any documents?
The Portuguese Embassy in China can translate the following documents from Portuguese to Mandarin:
- Criminal Record;
- Certificates of Academic Qualifications;
- Marriage certificates;
- Birth certificates;
The translation of documents will cost 30€ per page. The translations can be requested by sending the documents in advance to the Consular Section's email address: sconsular.pequim@mne.pt
